The head of President Joe Biden’s 2024 campaign has conceded that Florida’s 30 Electoral College votes belong to his rival, former President Donald Trump.
Jen O’Malley Dillon, chairwoman of Biden’s presidential campaign, made this admission during a recent podcast interview with Puck News. When asked by the far-left outlet whether the Biden campaign considered the Sunshine State as a battleground state, she responded in the negative.
The admission has reportedly left Biden’s ground organizing staff in Florida with dampened spirits. They took to social media to express their frustration: “Writing Florida off through a paywalled Puck News article while [campaign] staff are on the ground organizing here is not great. This was such an unnecessary, demoralizing gut punch.” (Related: POLL: Trump holds 14-point lead over Biden among Arab Americans in Florida, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Virginia.)
Dan Kanninen, battleground states director for the Biden campaign, quickly countered Dillon’s statement – adding to the campaign’s mixed messaging. “Florida is in play,” he asserted to The Hill.
According to Kanninen, Trump and his supporters are taking the state for granted while their extreme agenda continues to harm Floridians. The former White House liaison at the Obama-era Environmental Protection Agency stressed that Biden has has a strong story to tell on issues that matter most to Floridians, suggesting the campaign will continue to invest in the state.
A RealClearPolitics (RCP) average poll shows Trump leading Biden by 7.6 points in Florida. In 2016, Trump secured the Sunshine State by 1.2 points and in 2020, he secured it again by 3.3 points.
Dillon also told Puck News that the Biden campaign is focused in North Carolina. But the incumbent winning the Tar Heel State appears to be unlikely, as the recent RCP average poll showed Trump leading by 5.8 points there. He won the state by 3.6 points in 2016, and won it again four years later by 1.3 points.
The Biden campaign’s approach has raised questions about its strategy and messaging. With mixed signals and internal frustration, the campaign’s path forward remains uncertain. As political observers watch closely, Biden’s campaign risks appearing like a classic losing campaign, struggling to find its footing in key battleground states.
The Biden campaign’s claim that “Florida is in play” for the 2024 presidential election seems to be a far-fetched claim. Democrats in the Sunshine State are highlighting a new public opinion survey released by Fox News. The said survey, which polled 1,075 registered voters from June 1 to June 4, found that Trump (50 percent) leads Biden by just four points (46 percent).
“Trump is in trouble in Florida,” the Florida Democratic Party declared in a statement, asserting that the results “confirms that Florida is back as a battleground state.” The party subsequently used the poll results in a fundraising pitch.
But a closer look at the poll reveals that the results favor Trump more than Biden. The real estate mogul’s lead against the incumbent expands to seven points when third-party candidates are introduced. Here are the poll’s results if third-party candidates are factored in:
Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris are set for re-election, while Trump has not yet announced his running mate. Kennedy selected Nicole Shanahan as his running mate, while West selected Melina Abdullah of the Black Lives Matter movement as his vice president. Meanwhile, Stein is aiming to secure the Green Party’s nomination at its national convention in August.
